Hidradenitis Suppurativa Q & A

What is hidradenitis suppurativa?

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, recurring problem of the skin that develops in the teenage years after puberty. The problem is related to abnormal hair follicles. Painful skin nodules and abscesses can develop primarily in the armpits, groin, inner thigh and under breasts.

These painful nodules will eventually rupture and drain bloody to clear yellow fluid. Severe pain and swelling in these areas often restrict movement.

Over time these pain recurring lesions will result in severe scarring and disfigurement of the skin. Patients suffering from this condition often become socially withdrawn and depressed.

What causes hidradenitis suppurativa?

Current research suggests the main cause of hidradenitis suppurativa is an abnormality of the hair and sweat glands in the specific areas listed above. Obesity is a significant risk factor and problems likely develop due to warmth and moisture in the skin folds of those patients.

Similarly, friction of the skin due to excess weight predisposes to local skin inflammation. Smoking is another recognized risk factor associated with hidradenitis suppurativa. Metabolic and hormonal issues are commonly associated with the disease. Lastly, genetic factors are also a rare cause of the disease and passed from one generation to the next.

Infection is typically not a direct cause for hidradenitis but lesions may become secondarily infected. If you would like to discuss more regarding hidradenitis suppurativa, schedule a consultation with Dr. Amaya today using the online booking feature or by calling the office.

What Can Be Done to Treat Hidradenitis suppurativa?

There are multiple surgical interventions that have been performed all with varying success. However, such procedures are often limited to severe cases of hidradenitis suppurativa.

These surgical treatments are often complex and often avoided, if possible, due to prolonged and painful post-surgical wound management. Current nonsurgical interventions help reduce the severity of the lesions and the frequency of new abscesses.

At Amaya Wound Healing & Aesthetics, Dr. Amaya approaches each patient with the goal in mind to return the patient to as normal a lifestyle as possible. Interventions are performed to reduce the severity of each outbreak, reduce the pain and drainage and avoid additional disfiguring scar tissue.

Advanced wound dressings are applied to active draining lesions. Oral Metformin is effective in controlling hormonal and glucose/insulin abnormalities that have been shown to be present in patients suffering from hidradenitis suppurativa. Laser hair removal is recommended and performed in their office since the problem has been shown to be directly related to hair follicles.

Lastly, for patients with severe disease, administration of Humira®  has been approved for use in patients with Humira and experience in their office has shown to be very effective.
